Powell vs Gay after Olympics

Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell are set for a showdown in Gateshead just a fortnight after the Olympic 100m final.

The pair will meet at the Aviva British Grand Prix, which is part of the IAAF World Athletics Tour 2008, on 31 August in what is likely to be a highlight of the first athletics meeting in the UK after the Beijing Olympic Games.

It will be the first time they will have raced against each other in an IAAF Grand Prix status meeting this year.

Powell is the Commonwealth champion and former World record holder. He equalled his then World record of 9.77 the last time he ran in Gateshead two years ago.

Gay, the current World champion at 100m and 200m, was due to meet Powell, the World 100m bronze medallist at the recent Aviva London Grand Prix but had to withdraw due to an ongoing hamstring problem.

“It was just too much of a risk for me to run in London and I apologise to the British fans for not running there. But I promise I will make it up to them in Gateshead,” said Gay.

This summer, Gay has so far a best of 9.77 and Powell has 9.82 to his credit.

The Gateshead meeting will also be the first outing post-Beijing for the majority of Britain’s returning track and field stars.

The Ronaldo Case Is Closed

Sir Alex Ferguson has done his utmost to finally confirm that Cristiano Ronaldo will be staying at Manchester United this summer...

Ronaldo's has been the saga of the summer, as Madrid have made clear their desire to bring the player to the Santiago Bernabeu but Man United have been unrelenting in their resistance and utter refusal to even entertain the notion of selling the 23-year-old.

The Portuguese international has strongly suggested on a number of occasions since his side were eliminated from Euro 2008 that he wishes to join Madrid and will try to sign this summer, but Madrid have finally grown impatient and instead signed Rafael van der Vaart, formally introduced today as 'probably their last signing of the summer'.

As such, it seems as though Ronaldo will be staying at the club for a further season, at which point it is widely expected Sir Alex will allow him to leave.

"The matter is closed now," Ferguson told Sky Sports News. "He is a Manchester United player, it's finished.

"He is going to play here believe me."

Ronaldo's compatriot, former United assistant and now coach of the Portuguese national team, Carlos Queiroz, recently left the club for his country and speculation has been rife over who Ferguson will choose as his replacement, particularly as the Portuguese was poised to succeed the legendary Scot when he finally steps down, which is rumoured to be within the next three years.

Sir Alex has maintained that he will take his time in appointing a new assistant: "No news [on a new assistant] we take our time with that.

"We hope to have someone in by the end of September but we never rush these things. It is hard to replace good men.

"We have good coaches here, I have no problems with that aspect of it.

"I am just looking for a particular type of person to assist me in certain ways."

WHAT'S RIGHT WITH JAMAICA - So many blessings for this small country - Tuesday | August 5, 2008

WHAT'S RIGHT WITH JAMAICA - So many blessings for this small countrypublished: Tuesday | August 5, 2008BenjaminIn continuing our presentation of the thoughts of influential leaders in society on the more positive features of Jamaica, The Gleaner today brings you the views of Kenny Benjamin, chairman of Guardsman Group Ltd.ALTHOUGH A relatively small island, Jamaica has the features of any other much larger and older country. We are known internationally for our music, from the early beginnings of ska and mento, to reggae and dancehall. Worldwide, at the mention of Jamaica, immediately people say "Bob Marley", especially in Japan where not much English is spoken. Even dreadlocks have taken on international appeal. The debate now rages about our colourful language, Patois, and there is even talk of a Patois Bible. In the field of sports, we now have, at the same time, two world-class 100-metre sprinters competing in Beijing - Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt. How many other countries can boast this? We have Veronica Campbell too.Ideal for vacationsOur climate makes us enjoy sunshine almost 365 days of the year. Our winter season, from January to the end of March, does not drop below 80 degrees except rarely, unless you are high up in the hills. What an ideal place to vacation year round!Although crime has given us a negative image overseas, the majority of our people are friendly and warm. Visitors who get to know us will attest to the fact that we are the first to offer help and always have a cheerful smile and a quick handshake. You tell me, what's wrong with Jamaica that is not wrong anywhere else?
